 Victorious Return from TESAZ Staff Games

“Tambirai masoja ahwina kuhondo…”

Tambirai masoja ahwina kuhondoo…is an old time jingle which was sang at a time when war had come to an end. Not only an end, but a victorious one. The soldiers will march back to the camp in military-drill style whilst the wives, husbands, children and friends received them with joy. Such was the atmosphere when the GHTE 99 was driven past the newly branded college gate. Although the college was almost empty, we could in our spirits hear the echoes “tambirai masoja, ahwina kuhondo.” On Monday the 21st of July 2025 the Kwekwe Polytechnic team touched down after having successfully attended the Technical Education Sports Association of Zimbabwe (TESAZ) staff games held at Masvingo Polytechnic from the 17th-21st of July 2025. The tournament saw all Polytechnics in Zimbabwe and some guest teams such as Ministry of Finance and the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe converging at the same venue for about 5 days.

The journey had begun on a Thursday, amid a false start. The cold winter currently bedevilling the region had drained all the battery water from the college bus. The bus could just not start. It was as if gwendo guye gwagugwa. Several people interceded and some technical guys did put their minds together until the grrrrrr sound came at around 3pm. The journey was awesome. This includes the memorable march-past the Boterekwa cliffs and sharp curves. The Driver, Mr Kusano, with decades of experience gently and carefully negotiated the curves and the slopes.

Upon getting to Masvingo, the cold was something else, but just not good enough to quell the euphoria that encapsulated the entire tournament. Buses were all-over the place and they almost kissed each other as they scrambled for parking space. It was a good sight, mixing and mingling with different souls of different ages, characters, backgrounds and also coming from different regions. It was also a time to get to know each other. Even within our own bus, I could hear some wispers, “ko uyo ndiyani nhai iwe”. We work together but we don’t know each other. Such is the power of sports. It brings people together.

There was this song, which one could mistake for the tournament’s theme song. It was being played all over and at every opportunity. Its words were “Gore rino manhanga matete todya maruva…mhondoro dzemapako…”

The tournament was officially opened by the Secretary of TESC, Eng Mudondo who was represented by Mrs Mawarire. In his speech, he underscored the importance of wellness. It goes a long way to ventilate some work pressures, work related stress and inevitably, it results into health bodies, health minds and at the same time boosts productivity and effectiveness. The games were placed at various centres such as Victoria High School, Masvingo’s CBD and at Masvingo Polytechnic.

Although we did not win every game, it was clear that Kwekwe Polytechnic is still a formidable force. We are the champions when it comes to games such as Volley Ball, draft, some athletics and others. We however had a torrid time defending our name in some games such as soccer. The main reason was that we suffered numerous injuries during the 7 aside games. Nevertheless, Mr Chihota, the goalkeeper gave his best and was almost the man of the match, although he missed almost every missile fired at him. Our Tug of war teams have great potential as they almost stole the show. We still make further humble appeals to our strong men and women such as Mr Chavengwa and Ms L. Sibanda to join the teams for a good cause.

Away from sports, there was still time for an excursion. A trip to Masvingo without visiting the magnificent Great Zimbabwe would be incomplete. It is just an amazing set up put in place by our ancient fore-fathers, who despite not being certified with journeyman Class 1 certificates, did put up tremendous structures of unique architecture and engineering which are still standing up to this present day. At Great Zimbabwe there is a village and it became a popular spot as the tourists thronged the “pharmacy” for some sports herbs, I guess which were selling like hot cakes.

The final seal of the tournament was the modelling session which ran deep into the night as institutions battled for Ms and Mr TESAZ’s Title. It was nice seeing members of staff skilfully walking on the cart walk leaving some drooling and asking for some more. Our very own Ms Moto and Ms Sungwa had indicated their intentions to participate in the modelling and show them how it is done, but unfortunately they then did not contest as they had not prepared for all the required garments. Kwekwe Polytechnic’s men took cover when they were repeatedly asked to register for the contest.

After all has been said and done, the team is proud to have brought home some of the following medals from different games;
